What is Royalty Free Music?
Royalty free music is a licensing model where you pay once (or subscribe) for the right to use a piece of music without paying ongoing royalties each time it is played. Despite the name, royalty free music is not free, it simply means you do not owe the artist per use payments after the initial license purchase. This is the most common licensing model for creator music platforms.
What Royalty Free Really Means
The term royalty free confuses many creators because of the word free. Royalty free does not mean the music costs nothing. It means you pay once for the right to use the track, and you do not pay royalties (per play or per use fees) after that.
Traditional music licensing, the kind used in film and television, requires the producer to pay royalties every time the music is used. If a TV show re runs, the composer gets paid again. Royalty free licensing eliminates this recurring cost.
How Royalty Free Differs from Copyright Free
Copyright free music is music that is not protected by copyright, either because the copyright has expired (very old recordings), the creator has waived their rights (dedicated to the public domain), or the music was generated by an AI and has no copyright registration.
Royalty free music is still copyrighted. The composer still owns the rights. They are simply granting you a license to use it under specific terms. You cannot resell it, you cannot claim you wrote it, and there may be limits on where and how you can use it.
Common Royalty Free License Terms
Most royalty free platforms have similar terms: you can use the music in your videos on YouTube, social media, podcasts, and websites; you cannot resell or redistribute the music as a standalone file; you cannot register the track with Content ID; and for commercial use (ads, client work), you typically need a higher tier license.
